British Values

Preparing Our Children for Life in Modern Britain

At St. Patrick and St. Edmund’s, we are committed to preparing our children for life in modern Britain by promoting and embedding British values throughout our school community. These values, as defined by Ofsted, are:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We ensure that these values are regularly reinforced through our curriculum, school ethos, and daily interactions with our pupils.

How We Promote British Values at St. Patrick and St. Edmund’s

Democracy

  • Children vote for school council representatives, allowing them to have a say in school decisions.
  • Pupil voice is encouraged through class discussions, surveys, and suggestion boxes.
  • We teach the importance of democracy in lessons such as History, PSHE, and Religious Education.
  • Assemblies and debates help children understand fairness, leadership, and decision-making.

The Rule of Law

  • Pupils learn about the importance of laws, rules, and responsibilities in school and society.
  • We have clear school rules and behaviour policies that help children understand right from wrong.
  • Visits from police officers, legal professionals, and community leaders reinforce the role of law in everyday life.
  • Children take on responsibilities such as playground leaders and peer mentors, helping them appreciate structure and accountability.

Individual Liberty

  • Pupils are encouraged to make independent choices and understand their rights and responsibilities.
  • We promote freedom of speech in a safe and supportive environment, where pupils can express their views respectfully.
  • Children learn about online safety, personal responsibility, and self-confidence through PSHE and Computing lessons.
  • Extracurricular activities allow pupils to explore their interests and talents freely.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

  • Respect is at the heart of our school ethos and behaviour expectations.
  • Our Religious Education curriculum teaches children about different faiths and cultures, fostering understanding and acceptance.
  • Pupils take part in cultural celebrations, themed assemblies, and interfaith discussions.
  • We welcome visitors from diverse religious communities to share their beliefs and traditions with our children.
  • We actively challenge stereotypes and discrimination, ensuring that every child feels valued and included.

By embedding British values into everyday school life, we help our pupils grow into respectful, responsible, and well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life in modern Britain.
